Admiral Jonathan Howe was the civilian special representative to the United Nations for Somalia from 1993 to 1994, served as assistant to National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, and has served as commander of many different military operations, including a stint at NATO. Admiral Howe delivers an insider view of peacemaking in Somalia from the perspective of the UN, detailing the history of the conflict as well as the many challenges in achieving his UN mandate. Admiral Howe finishes by assessing what the U.S. can do to remedy its ?post-Somalia? syndrome. In the question and answer session, Howe addresses his future predictions for the country and the idea of an experimental UN ?fire brigade.?
