Event Details
James Cannon, the assistant to President Ford for Domestic Affairs and executive director of the Domestic Council, gives a lecture on his recent book on Ford?s rise to the office of the president. Cannon first relates the last days of the Nixon presidency, explaining what both the president and vice president were doing. He explains Nixon?s decision to select Ford as vice president and Ford?s to pardon Nixon. He argues that despite Ford?s shortcomings as a president he had several distinct successes such as ending the Vietnam conflict, carrying the country through a recession and presiding over the Helsinki Treaty, and restoring the integrity of the White House. During the questioning session he discusses the Mayaquez incident, Ford?s selection of vice president, Ford?s economic stance, Ford?s speech in New York City, and Ford?s appointments.
