Event Details
Elena Osokina, a specialist in Russian economics, discusses the 1930?s Soviet economy. She argues that supply policy was a critical factor, which not only shaped the 1930s but to a great degree the future of Russia. She explains that in the midst of industrialization, Russia?s limited resources were distributed to target groups. Osokina contends that this supply system was disastrous for the Russian society and economy. She then moves her discussion to the NEP era and then to the First Five Year Plan. She concludes her lecture by stating the Soviet government?s attempt to control the supply of goods was counterproductive. During the questioning session she answers inquiries about historiography, comparisons between the USSR and the PRC, Soviet statistics, cannibalism, and contemporary Russian economics.
