Event Details

Sterling Krenek, a professor from Western Illinois University, gives a lecture on realism in American foreign policy. Krenek first gives a historical account of the different Realistists in America as well as the different opinions as to what strategy would best reflect the teachings of realism. He then addresses Reagan, who he sees as partially a realist and partially an idealist. Krenek describes Reagan's successor, George Bush as far more realist in his approach to foreign affairs. In closing his discussion on Clinton, Krenek speculates whether the new president will continue to pursue realist policies. During the questioning session Krenek addresses the Vietnam War in respect to realism, realisms effect on policy making, the longevity of realism in America and realism in respect to America's role in Bosnia.
