Joseph Kruzel is the deputy assistant secretary of defense for European and NATO policy and a former member of the U.S. Delegation for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks for which he won the Distinguished Service Medal. Mr. Kruzel lists the challenges the U.S. faces in European relations, such as proving that the in the post-Cold War era the U.S. is dedicated to good relations and strong European security and encouraging democracy and progress in Central and Eastern European countries. Furthermore, Kruzel explains how certain alliances and partnerships can increase understanding and the effectiveness of American policy for Europe. In the question and answer session, Mr. Kruzel discussed possible NATO expansion, the problems in the former Yugoslavia, and the economic considerations between the U.S. and Europe.When
