Samuel Beer, the chairman of the Government department and president of the American Political Science Association, discusses nationalism. He argues that there are two forms of nationalism: liberal nationalism, the type that exists in America and religious/ethnic nationalism, the type that exists in Yugoslavia. He then lists the different varieties of democracies. Throughout his lecture, Beer relates Madison?s findings on the relation of nationalism and democracy. During the questioning session he examines the judicial system, Congress, the role of money and parties in America, NAFTA, the nation-state, nationalism in Western Europe, and epidemics.
