Merrill Peterson was the chair of the history department and the dean of the faculty of the arts and sciences at the University of Virginia who has published many works, most recently Lincoln in American Memory. Peterson reflects on the personal events in his life that shaped his academic career, especially the writing of his books that range in topic from Jefferson to John C. Calhoun. Mr. Peterson compares the image and influence of Lincoln and Jefferson in modern American culture.
