Jerry H. Jones, deputy assistant to President Gerald Ford, spoke about Ford’s “incredible personality” and his ability to handle fast-moving and competing events. Ford came into the Oval Office abruptly and had less time to “learn the presidency.” But even with an unorthodox beginning and many challenges, President Ford ran a close campaign against Georgia governor Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election.
