“If not completely unprecedented, it’s aberrational,” said Barbara Perry, co-chair of the presidential oral history program at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center. “Ex-presidents feel that they are part of this exclusive club. There are so few people who have been president, and you share this common bond, a brotherhood of sorts. And that is bipartisan and in some ways nonpartisan.”
